Aurelia Shimkus (Piano)
For her recording of "B-A-C-H. Ich ruf' zu Dir" ("An Exceptional Debut", Der Spiegel), Aurelia Shimkus was awarded the "ECHO KLASSIK 2016" in the category "Young Artist of the Year". She was born in Riga in 1997 and began playing the piano at the age of four. At the age of 9 she won first prize at the Latvian competition for young pianists
At the age of eleven she gave her first solo recital at the International Chamber Music Festival in Kaunas (Lithuania). In April 2013 she made her debut in Germany with a recital, and in the same year she was a prize winner at the competition "Kissinger Klavierolymp". In 2014, she was selected for a scholarship of the Mozart Society Dortmund.
As a soloist, she has played with the English Chamber Orchestra, the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra, the Georgian Chamber Orchestra of Ingolstadt and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra.
Aurelia Shimkus performs in concert halls such as the Konzerthaus Dortmund and the Tonhalle Zürich, and she is a guest at international music festivals such as the Kurt Weill Fest, the Kissinger Sommer, the Interlaken Classics Festival, the Next Generation Festival Bad Ragaz or the Puplinge Classique (Switzerland).
Aurelia Shimkus studied at the Emils Darzinš Music School with Sergey Osokin (Sergejs Osokins) in Riga and continues her education with Claudio Martinez-Mehner at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne.
She has participated in master classes with pianists such as Dominique Merlet, Bernd Goetzke, Pavel Gililov, Peter Jablonski and Ian Fountain.
