Biography

State Choir LATVIJA’s musical radiance complete with the warmest, refined and perfect instrumentation of the vocal culture and the specific sound of Latvian choral tradition which is a world-wide known miracle. The largest professional choir of the Baltic States regularly performs concert programmes with the world’s most prominent conductors and orchestras. The musical intelligence and vocal skill of the choristers make the State Choir LATVIJA a universal instrument capable of depicting subtle a cappella paintings as well as conjuring up grand vocal symphonies accompanied by a large orchestra.

Since 1997 Māris Sirmais is the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the choir, and Māris Ošlejs its General Manager. They are also founders of the annually organized International Sacred Music Festival in Latvia.

State Choir LATVIJA has performed at the most famous concert halls like Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre, Gasteig Munich, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall Moscow, Lincoln Center New York and many others. The choir boasts working with outstanding conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Valery Gergiev, Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Andris Nelsons, Simone Young, and Jaap van Zweden.

The choir has collaborated among others with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras in Germany, Russia, Estonia, Finland, Israel, USA, China and Singapore.

The State Choir LATVIJA has participated in recordings produced by Warner Brothers, Harmonia Mundi, Wergo, Ondine as well as in numerous recording projects by both Latvian and foreign music publishers.
